Oetingen self-picking garden
In 2020, Oetingen self-picking garden will not yet be open to the public. Planning work is already being carried out and the free parts are sown with soil-improving mixtures of clover, marigold, ... We already provide an introduction moment to enjoy the beautiful flowers.
As from 2021 we start the production of fresh, healthy and sustainable vegetables, standard fruit, berries, herbs, flowers, meat (duck, rabbit) and even firewood.
But the self-picking garden is much more than tasty food:
- It will serve as an open-air laboratory for the STEAM-academy of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, for the academy of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. A dynamic practise-and-learn center for science and technology that will be based in the old school building next to the church in Oetingen. The self-picking garden will provide space for children, young people and adults who want to learn and experience around the themes of agriculture, ecology, nature, forest, water, air, environment and soil.
- In the relaxation and meeting zone in the forest you can spend quite some time without purchase obligation (during the opening hours of the self-picking garden).
- There is also space for the 'Lapino' project of a very young entrepreneur (Andreas, 12 years) who wants to breed small pets (dwarf rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas) with respect for their individuality and behaviour, as well as create the entire framework: design and make pens, cages, fodder... The picking garden itself will also produce fodder for this project, both fresh and dry, on the instructions from Lapino.
- The self-picking garden itself is located on a plot with a part that is developed as an (oak) forest and which is surrounded by shrubs and trees, cut down according to periodic coppice management. It creates a unique microclimate where butterflies and bees thrive. You can observe them and learn about the solitary and honey bees that also find their place there.
Where can you find us?
The self-picking garden is located within the surrounded plot where a pear orchard used to be, along the old tramway. You can park your car in the center of Oetingen, at the church, or on the Oude Plaats, because the trambed or the 'Grachtweg' walking path are not accessible with motorized vehicles (unless agreed with farmer Mike or farmer Bert for collection of large quantities of vegetables / fruit or firewood).
